The CYCLIST within me
I had a two hour lesson with Sam...a ski instructor from England. This guy is awesome...he skis about 250 days out of the year. When he is not in AUSTRIA he goes to Austriala to instruct there. He is a level 4 ski instructor...so what ever that means...he is really good at what he does. He has skied in Canada, Japan, so pretty much all over the place. This being the 1st time I skied in about 2 years I was a little anxious at first, but got the hang of it pretty well. I think secretly Sam was scared I may take his job...but he just didn't want to let on. He really helped me with my position on the skis and where my center of mass needs to be and where to shift my weight in the turns.
After the lesson he was very complimentary and I really thought it was a good use of time and provided me with a great deal of confidence.
Then, my brother and I, hit the slopes...we skied down one short section of black slope and took it easy and really enjoyed it. We then went on a loooong run....10 km long...that was amazing....then hoped on a gondola .... Oh that reminds me...at ski beach they have tags they put on your zipper of your jacket and that lets you on. Here they have a plastic card you can put in the sleeve of your jacket or your left chest pocket....then you walk up to the turn style and it blinks green and trough the stall you go. I thought that was really cool. So after we hopped on the gondola we skied to a different one then over to another one... It was amazing to me...these gondolas some you put your skis on the outside and walk in and the door closes others are more of a ski lift and you pull thbar down (those seats were heated) very nice. The snow was so white...just amazing!
After we got to our last run before we needed to pick up the boys we were going down a red slope...no big deal...I guess I was a bit fatigued...I fell wrong and landed square on my right shoulder. OUCH... I knew I hurt but didn't know how bad....after a few minutes I walked down a little section then put the skis on and skied to the next gondola. Marc needed to ski down to get Nicolas from his ski school. When I got down in the gondola. Marc grabbed my skis for me and we decided to get a dr to check me out. So after a quick ride down the mountain...I went into what we american's call a Doc In the Box. Everyone was wearing red and white...I was beginning to this I was in Switzerland instead of Austria. The ladies helped me tak off my boots, shirts, etc. what was kind of funny they put an ice pack on my shoulder but then put a blanket under the ice...well what's the point of that? Any way I fussed a little bit and kept putting the ice directly on the shoulder and then they would out the blanket on...it almost became a bit of a game.
So they wanted to take a X-ray and I walked with socks and skipants on over to the X-ray machine. Then they took a pic and I waddled back to my exam room. They pulled up the pic on the monitor and I was going to snap a pic with my phone but my phone was Dead...so when Marc came he took a pic with his phone. Then they decided to give me some pain meds through an IV a nd then they would put a harness on me at align my collarbone straight...that was not alot of fun...and even less fun when I went back the next day so they could tighten it.
They gave me some pills and a dropper....the pills were for stomach acid and also ibuprofine and the drops were pain medicine. I had a couple of glasses of wine with dinner so I only took 1/2 the pain medicine dosage. The next morning I took the other dose of pain drops and I was dizzy the enire day. I pretty much stayed in bed...I tried to get up to eat breakfast with the boys but I quickly turned around and went back to bed. I didn't eat or drink anything...maybe a sip or two of water from my water bottle but that was about it. I tried to get up around 3 cause I had a dr appointment for 4 pm...I was really dizzy and my mouth started watering, but I never threw up...after a while I finally got my pj's off and my jeans on. Got my crocs on and my jacket 1/2 way on. Marc and Nicholas came and picked me up and we walked to his car. Before I got to the car I got really woozy and had to sell a Buick (ie I threw up) in the snow...the nice part of this was I covered it up with snow and got in the car.
I must of looked a bit rough cause everyone looked at me with a long stare...the dr gave me another dropper to take care of the sick feeling...and they titened my harness or Bra as I described to Julie and that has not been pleasant but hopefully it will do it's job.
When we got home I tried to eat some soup but it didn't stay long and I sold another Buick in Marc's bathroom. :-)
I went onto bed...and then finally skyped Julie to tell her of my adventure. I sleeped on and off most of the night and even listened to Clemson game via Internet radio. Craziness!
This morning Nicholas came and knocked on my door and I ate breakfast with the boys and drank some coffee and am feeling much better. I have not taken anymore pain medicines only ibuprofine. I am going to venture out to the slopes to hopefully watch the boys do their snowboarding and Nicholas skiing. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking and want to absorb it every minute I can.
I guess as a friend of mine said I should have taken a 3 hour lesson instead of just a 2 hour lesson. That's pretty funny. I am disappointed I can't ski but am determined to enjoy every moment and make the most of it. I am really enjoying the time with my brother and my nephews...I hope that we can do something like this again...minus any broken bones.
I tried to add pics to this post, but wasn't able to...so I will send those separately.

This was in our local paper... The Easley Progress article on me and my two buddies from Easley.
It is beside the obituaries. I know we look like death afterwards but really?
Enjoy,
Patrick
